The Studio.
Studio Shan interiors evoke a sense of calm nostalgia. While leaning towards modernist influences from the 1930s-60s, we are inspired by contemporary design and emerging artists & craftsmen, keeping interiors feeling fresh and inviting.
Experimentation through bespoke furniture, commissioned art, and collaboration with different makers is what we do best; playing subtly with colour and texture to draw the eye and create spaces that are warm, peaceful and unique.
Studio Shan has been involved in residential, retail and hospitality projects across London and Surrey.
The Founder
Studio Shan is led by founder and director, Lishan Tham.
Coming from a family steeped in property development, Malaysian-born Lishan grew up frequenting building sites: “It taught me so much about the ins and outs of running and delivering effective projects. I have seen what can be achieved when hard work and efficiency are combined with creativity.”
This combination of traits is reflected in Lishan’s own career path. After studying Geography and Economics at LSE, she worked as an urban planner, then later swapped career to explore her creative side at London’s KLC School of Design. After working at a London interior design firm for a number of years, running extensive FF&E projects, Lishan set up Studio Shan in 2021. “I think these different parts of my background are threaded through the Studio’s ethos. We merge creativity and imagination with practicality.”
Lishan also notes the impact of her Malaysian upbringing: “My background has definitely influenced my design in terms of colour and texture, as well as my use of materials that come from nature.”
“I think the building I grew up in also had a strong influence on me: It looked a bit like the Barbican, full of strong, simple lines. That’s why I am drawn to modernism. It provides an elegant base coat to my work, which I then layer with earthy colours, art, and pattern-making.”
